Chapter 3 · Choosing Your Installer
3.7 Installer vetting checklist
| What to check | How to verify |
|---|---|
| C-46 Solar Contractor or C-10 Electrician license | CSLB License Lookup (in California) or your state's equivalent |
| Is the install crew in-house or subcontracted? | Ask directly. Check the company name on the Certificate of Insurance (COI). |
| Is the quote 30%+ above market? | Get 3 quotes minimum. Convert each to $/Watt (with battery should land $3.5–5/W; without battery $2.2–3/W). |
| Is the sales commission five-figure? | Ask flat-out what percentage of the quote goes to sales / referral fees. |
| Are the installers legal workers covered by Workers' Comp? | Ask for the Workers' Comp insurance certificate. |
| Does the contract include 5+ years of workmanship coverage? | Read the contract. |
| What happens to the warranty if the installer goes bankrupt? | Verify they use mainstream-brand equipment with manufacturer warranties, and that they will hand over the design drawings to the homeowner. |
Habit: after receiving a contract, cool off for at least 3 days. Get a knowledgeable third party (even a competing installer) to review the contract clause-by-clause. Free reviews exist — just ask.
